Changing hostname or IP address on Directory Server

Question

The affects of changing the IP address or hostname of an ITDS server.

Answer

When the server is started, by default we listen on all currently configured ip addresses and grab the currently configured hostname. If the hostname or ip changes, the server simply needs to be stopped and restarted. As long as the default configuration was used, nothing in ITDS needs to be changed for the server to start successfully after an IP address or hostname change (although some changes might be required in DB2; see below).

However, if the server has been bound to a specific interface (using idssethost or the ibm-slapdIpAddress attribute in the ibmslapd.conf), and that hostname/address is no longer available, ITDS will fail to start until that is appropriately adjusted (that can be done with the idsxinst tool, idssethost or ldapmodify).

In addition, if replication has been configured using either hostnames or IP addresses that have been changed, these values in the replication topology will also need to be changed to the new value for replication to work.

Finally, the backend DB2 server usually will need to be reconfigured if the hostname has been changed; this is accomplished by editing the db2nodes.cfg file in the instance directory).
