Access IBM DS3500 on console

Basically, I connected to the Serial port of my DS4700 using a null modem cable from a laptop running Hyper Term. If you have really old firmware on the DS4700 it lessens the chances for success. Here is the writeup I did for my colleagues when I came across the process:

DS4700 Connection Using the Serial Port

To set up the controllers through the serial port:

Connect to the DS4000 Storage Server with a null modem cable to the serial port of your system. For the serial connection, choose the correct port, serial is COM1, and the following settings:
      57600 Baud
      8 Data Bits
      1 Stop Bit
      No Parity
      Xon/Xoff Flow Control
Send a break signal to the controller. This varies depending on the terminal emulation. For most terminal emulations, such as HyperTerm, which is included in Microsoft Windows products, press Ctrl+Break.
If you only receive unreadable characters, press Ctrl+Break again, until the following message appears:
Press <SPACE> for baud rate within 5 seconds.
Press the Space bar to ensure the correct baud rate setting. If the baud rate was set, a confirmation appears.
Press Ctrl+Break to log on to the controller. One of the following message appears:
Press within 5 seconds: <ESC> for SHELL, <BREAK> for baud rate.
Press within 5 seconds: <S> for Service, <BREAK> for baud rate.
Press the <Esc> key to access the controller shell. Provide login/password as prompted.

If VxWorks login is displayed, respond as below:

VxWorks login: shellUsr

Password: wy3oo&w4

If you are prompted as below, respond as noted:

Enter password to access shell: infiniti

Note the default login name for VxWorks is shellUsr. The password to use is wy3oo&w4.

Other possible passwords are ‘infiniti’ and ‘y2llojp’, depending on NVSRAM levels.

This will bring you to a → prompt. After getting to the → prompt do the following:

Type the following command at the -> prompt:
      isp clearSYMbolPassword
      Hit Enter
At the -> prompt type ‘exit’.
It is suggested that this procedure be performed on both controllers. (Just like they suggest you look both ways before crossing the street.)
Remove the storage subsystem from the list in the Enterprise Management Window, shutdown the GUI, restart it and then re-add the storage subsystem. This will force a rescan of the array.
