First step:

  1. initial setup : Default IP on LAN4 is in the range 169.254.0.0/255.255.0.0, hard to scan
  2. Best is to use synology-assistant it can be downloaded from Synology web site, only for Wîndows! This tool will scan and find very fast the IP of the storage.
http://<ip>:5000/ you have to setup the new login and password

Second step:

  1. initial setup (hostname), and the latest OS DSM*.pat package is required
  2. then setup bonding and networking

Third step:

If you have to use High Availability, synchronization with automatic failover, download the package HighAvailability-broadwell and install it.

Then configure the cluster before doing something else, because it will format the volumes

If no cluster, the format yourself the volumes.

Fourth step:

Then install additional packages from synology web site if required. Theses packages are installed on the volumes from cluster, all installed before setup of cluster are lost!

Example of Packages:

HyperBackup: backup to Cloud (S3, SoftLayer, Azure, DropBox...), rsync, remote NAS...
multiple Web servers: apache, Tomcat...

INFO You can connect to a Synology using ssh (enable the service in the web interface), connect using the admin login, and if needed witch to root: sudo -i (admin password will be asked)

HA require identical hardware: same disk size, same network adapters….
